This reminds me of the Enemy of the State run on Wolverine. Wolverine went up against all of the main heroes and kind of won, but never by making his opponents look like bitches or by making Wolverine look invincible, he always got the crap beaten out of him.

Andrew W.: Maybe it's that investment in the character that's keeping us down? Like you said: world's finest team; one of those dudes spun the world backward to reverse time, so laying waste to evil with a casual backhanded sweep of his hand is plausible in the brain. The silver age can do a lot for your credibility, I guess? Since the Hulk has always had a measure of grounding humanity in him, seeing him punch the Watcher is just... stupid.

tavella: Well, look at the cover. I wanted to buy it too! Hulk vs. Thor, this should be a recipe for awesomesauce and instead we get it phoned in by one of the top writers in the field. The cover is there to judge the book and by all rights, it should have been good.

Hulk: You tell 'em, Hulk!

Yeah. I mean, I get the appeal. I ate this kind of thing up when Loeb and McGuiness were writing Superman/Batman. They were writing some good, fun, albeit lowbrow stuff there. And even though you have one story arc where you had Superman and Batman tearing through like 30 villains, in one fight, in one issue . . . I guess it just didn't have the same impact because I wasn't as invested in any of the characters getting defeated, and hey. Superman and Batman. World's Finest Team.

It sells, though, which is one of the more depressing commentaries on comics readers that I've seen lately. Not only in the 100K+ zone, but Hulk #4 actually sold more than Hulk #3.

I agree. My nerdrage was strong when I heard how the fight went down. I was already angry how World War Hulk seemed to be a lot of the same no-selling nonsense, and to have Loeb pull it again and with characters I'm actually invested in is annoying.
